Child reported to be carried away by river currents

EATON - A caller to 911 Wednesday reported seeing a man being carried down the Mississinewa River in the Eaton area.

Search crews spent three hours searching for the person, only to come up empty handed.

"We don't know if it's a child or adult," Sheriff George Sheridan said.

The search continued until a storm approached the area.

No one living in the Key Kolony apartment complex or surrounding areas claimed to know someone who was missing.

At the time of print, police had not received any information on a missing person.

The search has been called off until a missing person's report comes in, officials said.

The 911 call was made by Chanel Reynolds who said she saw what seemed to be a boy swimming behind her home at Key Kolony apartments.

She said she had gone outside to tell her son and his friends to get away from the water.

She then saw what she said looked like a young boy swimming and being carried away by the current while holding onto a log.

Reynolds said she ran into her apartment and called 911. When she returned to the river the boy was gone, she said.

An 8-year-old neighborhood boy who was outside at the time said he heard the boy yell help.

Along three of the bridges on the river, Eaton and Delaware county police, firemen, and numerous Eaton residents waited hoping to spot him traveling downstream.

They waited with binoculars and ropes trying to catch the person, if spotted, before he drifted farther.

"We don't know what he was wearing or how old he was," fireman Jay Maddy said.

Reynolds only spotted his head, saying he had dark hair.

Boats were brought in to look along the banks of the river for the missing person.

A helicopter was called in, but landed shortly after because of the storm approaching, officials said.

"I always tell my son to stay away from the river because the current is so strong he could be carried away," Reynolds said
