Campgrounds offer outdoor enjoyment

Prices range from $10 to $17.50 for an overnight stay

With the summer upon Muncie residents, the need to be outdoors continues to rise.

Muncie offers two campgrounds: Big Oak Park and Prairie Creek Reservoir.

Each offers tent camping and RV camping with full hook-up offering water and electricity.

Big Oak Park sits on 10 acres of land which includes an acre pond for fishing, a basketball court and a recreation hall, owner Cecil Jones said.

Big Oak Park does invite overnight guest, but it is mostly an RV campsite with guest staying for numerous weeks.

"Many of our guest leave their RVs here and only come for the weekends and sometimes for just the summer," Jones said.

Bob and Jackie Held are guests staying at Big Oak Park for five days. The couple, who are Florida residents, spend most of their time on the road with their jobs.

They have found that traveling in an RV is the best way to get around.

"We've got everything with us and we don't have to carry our bags through airports or in and out of motels," Bob Held said.

The price is $17.50 for a night at Big Oak Park with full hook-ups.

A night spent tenting under the stars for two people costs $10.

Big Oak park is located five miles north of Ball State at N. 500 W., Jones said.

Prairie Creek Reservoir also offers camping.

This campsite offers visitors a very clean atmosphere with a beach and marina, a spokeswoman for the campground said.

The camp rents row boats for guests to enjoy on the reservoir, and the marina will rent out a variety of equipment including paddle boats.

Several playgrounds surround the area, and swimming is available for all ages.

The campground attracts numerous tent campers on the weekends, but they also provide full hook-up for RV campers.

Prairie Creek Reservoir offers guests the comfort of 24-hour security as they enjoy the scenery of nature, a representative said.

"Our rates are very low compared to state parks," the spokeswoman said.

The cost of tenting for one night costs $8 and RV camping costs $11.

"We love camping and being outdoors," Jackie Held said. "But we always make sure to bring enough bug spray."
