Nowicki named to All-American team

A Ball State player is once again honored for academic success. James Nowicki has been named to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America Third Team, becoming the twelfth Cardinal to the All-America team.

Nowicki, a junior, maintains a 3.97 cumulative grade point average as a premed major. This past season he played in 36 contests, starting in more than half of them. He held a batting average of .288 for the season while hitting a career high 15 RBIs. He had a career game against Central Michigan on March 28. Nowicki contributed five RBIs off a five-for-six day in a 24-4 blowout victory.

As a junior, Nowicki owns a .259 career batting average, and he has hit five home runs. He also has scored 27 runs and knocked in 24 RBIs. He has a career .341 base percentage to go along with a .389 career slugging percentage.

Nowicki's recognition is an extension of a previous award given to three members of the baseball team: Marc Franz, Nowicki and Ben Schroeder. All three were named to the Verizon Academic All-District V First Team, but Nowicki was the only to be given national recognition.

Nowicki became the third Cardinal since 1997 to be awarded with the honor, the last being Matt Deckman in 2002 on the First Team. The previous year in 2001, Deckman had been named to the Third Team.

Head coach Greg Beals said the award is a credit to Nowicki's effort on both sides of the sideline as well as a "tribute to the university and our academic support services."
