Cardinals take women's MAC award

BSU wins Jacoby Trophy for fourth consecutive year

The athletics department of Ball State has won the Mid-American Conference Jacoby Trophy for the 2002-2003 women's season. Ball State placed fifth for the men's Reese Cup.

The Jacoby Trophy is the MAC award given to the school with its six highest finishes in all 12 women's sports championships sponsored by the MAC. By rule, three of the six finishes must come from basketball, volleyball and softball.

In winning the award, Ball State women had high finishes in their sports. The volleyball team captured both MAC regular season and tournament championships, earning 13 points, while the basketball team tied for the league title, earning 12.5 points. Ball State also got second place finishes out of soccer, cross country and indoor track and field, getting 12 points for each. The softball team added 4.5 points for a ninth-place tie.

Altogether, the women's teams earned 66 points, three higher than runner-up Kent State. This year's Jacoby marks Ball State's fourth consecutive and fifth overall, a MAC record. The string of four straight top finishes makes Ball State only the second school to do so, joining the Western Michigan women of 1984-1987. Ball State won its first Jacoby in 1998.

The Reese Cup is awarded in the same manner and under the same criteria as the Jacoby. Three of the six sports are set sports; however, instead of softball and volleyball being two of them, men teams must be from football and baseball.

Ball State earned 13 points from the tennis team through winning the MAC championship, 12 points for a second-place effort from the swimming team, 11 for baseball and 10 from the golf team's fourth place finish. Other points came from the other two required sports: football (7.5) and basketball (4.5).

Ball State has already secured four Reeses in the 46-year life of the award, with the latest coming in 1998. Ball State also has two runner-up finishes, the latest coming in 2001.
