Campus litter sparks fiery student rant

I am writing to express my irritation with the people on this campus. Saturday I went to North Quad with the guy I'm dating to feed squirrels.

However, when we got to the quad, we found it littered in various areas with trash and those "wet paint" signs for the fences that should have been disposed of a week ago.

This aggravated us, so we went around and picked up the garbage we found, griping about how the university should have trash cans on the quad to help prevent this sort of thing, and how students should be conscientious enough to use them.

Then as we were driving back through campus, we passed by the Robert Bell Building and saw what is perhaps the stupidest thing I've seen all semester. Some (presumably drunken) idiot had put the yellow "Auto Mall" newspaper holder in the tree on the corner.

I cannot even begin to describe how moronic this is. We stopped and removed it from its perch, and as we did so we realized that there was garbage there too. So we picked it up.

I noticed that most of what was lying around were those flyers someone had put up -- the man's face with the pipe. What the point is of these flyers, I will never know; they're stupid, and they make the campus look like crap.

So we took down the ones on the west side of the intersection and threw them away. In my continued rage, I also cleared off the light pole, which was covered with a variety of severely outdated flyers and tape.

The point of this rant is two things. First, this campus is full of morons, and I am sick and tired of dealing with them. Have some respect for the people who live and learn here, and stop treating this campus like one big garbage can.

I won't even get into my beef with the smokers who flick their cigarette butts wherever they please because it's just too much effort to find an ash can.

Second, this campus looks like crap. In the midst of our conversation about the garbage, my companion and I realized that the landscaping on this campus is also terrible.

There are all kinds of areas that are nothing but dirt, bare patches in places where campus tours go every day, and no, that crappy mulch does not make the area under the trees look any better. It just stinks.

Both the students and the people in charge of allotting money for campus improvements need to take a good look around and realize the sad state of our campus. It looks terrible because neither the students nor the people in charge take care of it, and I am tired of it.

From now on, throw your garbage in a garbage can. Put your cigarette butts in an ash can, not on the sidewalk and in the grass; the next person I see flicking a butt into the grass is likely to get that same butt thrown into their book bag or purse.

Take some pride in yourselves and in this campus. We're all adults here, and it's about time everyone acted like it. To use an old catch phrase, give a hoot, don't pollute.
