TCOM nominated for 10 regional Emmy Awards

Winners will be named at the ceremony in Cleveland on June 7

Jim Shasky is proud to be competing against one of his students for an Emmy award.

The telecommunications professor and non-traditional student Terry Marsh are both up for Best Director in Crafts at the Cleveland Regional Emmy Awards.

"I think it'll be supercool to have a student there," Shasky said.

"He's some awesome competition," Marsh added, "but I'm pleased."

Ball State's Telecommunications Department received 10 regional Emmy Award nominations, which were announced Thursday afternoon, by the Cleveland chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The winners will be announced June 7 at a ceremony in Cleveland.

The chapter includes stations in Indiana, northern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. Ball State students will be competing against seasoned professionals as well as faculty.

Shasky's project, "Squeakers," a documentary exploring the relationship between education and computers, received five nominations, including nods for best special program, videography, editing and music composition.

Marsh, who has taken some of Shasky's single-camera courses, received a single nomination for his short film "Lollipop," a study in the theory of what goes around comes around, that follows a lollipop changing hands.

"A baby's laughter leads a child into a surprise-filled adventure with a lollipop," he said. "What you do comes back to you."

The student-produced WIPB newsmagazine "Connections Live" received its fourth consecutive nomination for Best Student Program. The show has won the past two years.

"I'm very excited about it," said co-executive producer Jill Siebert. "It's something the crew deserves. Everyone's worked really hard this year."

Other nominees include freshmen Arne Ahrens and Kerstin Krieg, who were honored in the Feature and Entertainment category and for their short segment "Wonderland," and sophomore Jaron Henrie-McCrea, who got two nods in the same category for short segments "Strumpet" and "Welcome to JASH."

Siebert, a junior telecommunications major, said she hopes the nominations will give the department an added prestige.

"It'll be a good recruiting tool for freshmen," she said. "They'll know that we're a professional program that's recognized not just at Ball State and Indiana, but throughout the nation."
