Our View: Endorsing Rector

AT ISSUE: Former SGA president runs for city council position, exhibits maturity required for job

Tommy Rector, Republican candidate for an at-large position on the Muncie City Council, would be an asset to both Ball State and Muncie.

Rector is a Muncie native and 2002 Ball State graduate. He is also the son of a local business owner.

Through his Student Government Association presidency, Rector worked to establish the Muncie Coalition, a group of students that work with the city of Muncie on problems and concerns of the city and the university.

This effort shows Rector is capable of working with both sides and is ready to represent Ball State to Muncie, and vice versa.

He has not only led SGA, but also has served as president of the Theta Chi fraternity and as a resident assistant. To do these jobs successfully, one has to have time-management skills, negotiation skills and has to obtain the trust of many people.

Though Rector may seem young for a city council position at 25, he has already exhibited enough maturity to do the job.

As a recent graduate, the needs of the students and employees of Ball State are still fresh in his mind, while the concerns of his hometown will still be taken into consideration.

"He is young and a recent graduate and that's a perspective that the City Council doesn't have right now," Muncie Mayor Dan Canan said.

The only way to achieve that perspective is to get Rector into office.
