Speaker kicks off Latino Awareness Month

Lecture will be Monday at 5:30 p.m. in Cardinal Hall.

A theatrical production, a history lesson and a cultural dinner are just several of the events that will highlight the Latino culture during Latino Awareness Month.

Events that will run throughout March will kick off with speaker Fernando Rovelo at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Cardinal Hall A and B in the Student Center.

Rovelo's lecture will focus on the Latino population's role on campus and other issues affecting Latinos, said Janet Arias, secretary for the Latino Student Union.

"We're trying to put on educational things so everyone can know the different facets of Latinos. We want to show everyone that we're here."

- Joanne Reyes, president of Latino Student Union

Rovelo is a doctoral student studying Spanish, Arias said.

A play, "Teatro Luna," will focus on stereotypes surrounding Latina women, Arias said. The production will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, also in Cardinal Hall A and B in the Student Center.

Arias said she hopes the month's events will educate students about Latino culture and diversity.

"Our activities always have a point," Arias said. "We (LSU) are always trying to help people learn and make our cause known. (These events) are a way of showing why we're here."

Students can have a history lesson in the Latino culture through "Latino History 101," the first of its kind for Latino Awareness Month, said Arias. Held at 7 p.m. on March 18 in Cardinal Hall A in the Student Center, the seminar will showcase important events of Latino culture.

Learning about other cultures enables one to become a better person, said Jesus Antonio Mendez, a member of LSU and a research assistant for the Center for Information and Communication Sciences.

"We need to remember, and we need to learn," Mendez said. If we forget (to learn about others), we become selfish and individualistic. We only think of number one."

Students will be able to taste many Latino dishes during a cultural dinner from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on March 27 at the Scheidler clubhouse.

Latino Awareness Month is a way to bring the Latino culture to those who normally would not experience it, said Joanne Reyes, president of LSU.

"We're trying to put on educational things so everyone can know the different facets of Latinos," Reyes said. "We want to show everyone that we're here."

But learning about other cultures should not be confined to just a month, Mendez said.

"We're just scratching the surface," he said.
