Our View: Can I see the cockpit?

AT ISSUE: Aviation promotion is a chance for students to relate to troops

Ball State students have an opportunity to relate to their peers overseas this Wednesday.

Free flights in Marine Corps aircraft are being offered at the Delaware County Airport. The purpose of the promotion is to make people aware of the Marine Corps' aviation program.

Students will fly over Muncie at speeds of up to 205 mph, and they will also be given the chance to fly the aircraft, a Piper Twin-Navajo.

While the program's instructors will likely not put participants in situations similar to the Marine's, it is still a chance to make a connection with college-age students fighting a war overseas. The offer is a chance to taste just a sample of what they go through on a regular basis and to talk to instructors who can tell students more about it.

This will by no means be a war-simulator. It will not recreate the pressure one might feel flying into enemy territory.

But it will bring you one step closer to understanding what your friends are doing "over there."

Take a ride over to the Delaware County Airport, at the intersection of N. Walnut Street and Riggin Road between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Then take a ride over Muncie and see what Ball State looks like from the sky. Spend some time talking to the Marines who are there, and try and get an idea of what things are like for the troops.
