SGA slates face off

With Student Government Association elections rapidly approaching, the two presidential slates will take to the podium for the second and final debate tonight.

This full-slate debate will take place at 7 p.m. in Ball Communications Studio C. This debate will differ from last Wednesday's debate because the first debate consisted of president and vice president candidates only.

Tonight's debate will be hosted by telecommunications professor Steve Bell. There may be some differences in the format, but Loving Slate campaign manager Chris Borkowski hopes his slate will get the same results.

"The Loving Slate was prepared on all issues," Borkowski said of last week's debate. "They are knowledgeable about every aspect of this university."

Presidential candidate Nick Loving was confident about his slate's performance at last week's debate.

"We won the debate," he said. "Our platform issues are better, their commitment to diversity can be questioned and their ability to run SGA should be a serious question."

Jayson Manship, presidential nominee on the Manship Slate said there were no winners or losers in a presidential debate.

"I don't understand how that is a competition," Manship said. "The point of the first debate is to get points across, and we both did it."

Manship and Borkowski both said the main goal of the second debate are different than the first. The two representatives do not agree, however, on what that goal is.

"We want to hammer home our platform issues," Manship said, "and fight for what we believe."

Borkowski said his goal was "to have fun."

Manship said the cameras and the full-slate format does not have his slate worried, but they are not calling this just another campaign stop.

"This is very important," he said. "The race is close and we want a positive impact from it. We're prepared because we've been doing this at every place we go."

Borkowski says that if the Manship Slate is prepared, it is a dramatic shift from the last debate.

"It seemed to me that they bring up names of people who they don't have any contact with," Borkowski said. "They don't know the answers. I hope someone asks, 'What is SGA?'"

The debate will be televised live on campus on Channel 57.
