Our View: Speak up

AT ISSUE: Students have no more excuses; SGA forum gives them the power of choice

Students, faculty, staff, administrators and alumni who are completely, utterly and blissfully happy with Ball State University, its policies and its practices, disregard this.

But those who may have a concern here or there, pay attention. At 4 p.m. today, anyone with a complaint is being given a chance to do something about it in AJ 175.

The Student Government Association is sponsoring an open forum to be attended by such university bigwigs as Douglas McConkey, vice president for student affairs; Thomas Lowe, associate provost and dean of University College; Kay Bales, associate vice president for student life; Bubba Cunningham, director of intercollegiate athletics; and Robbie Lopez, assistant director of Housing and Residence Life.

Members of the Ball State community are welcome to voice complaints and concerns about anything and everything that is Ball State. Parking surely will be brought to the table. Ball State's attempt to level the home of a family that gave so much to the university is ripe for discussion. What about minority representation at Ball State?

Similar forums sponsored by Team Tolu have been held in the past. Attendance was overall poor. Two were focused on fixed issues. The third was held last spring. Maybe the topics brought to the table by Team Tolu, while often discussed bitterly by students at lunch, weren't ones students wanted to talk about.

That excuse is now gone. The executive board of SGA has gathered five major players at the university in one room and has handed the microphone to the community.

It's time to step up or go home.
