Letter to the editor: Pursuit of equality, diversity responsibility of students

Dear Editor,

I have recently read many ignorant comments in the Daily News regarding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Many students don't seem to think that the Daily News and Ball State University have been doing enough to promote diversity within our campus.

The students are the ones who don't support Dr. King's idea of unity. This is made clear by Jarred Dortch's comment in the Jan. 31 issue of the Daily News, "The only time I feel comfortable is when I'm with my people."

The Black Student Association is upset about the university's lack of support, but can't promote diversity or equality itself because its name promotes segregation.

Those who think that the university hasn't supported MLK Day enough are overlooking the fact that we now have the day off from classes. Those who think the university should create more programs for MLK Day are lazy. If you'd like to see something done to honor Dr. King, you should do it yourself without expecting the university to do it for you.

The university would provide a location for the proposed event without any trouble, but you have to take the first step and organize it. Dr. King would not have liked the idea of one day in his honor for diversity and tolerance; I think he would be horrified by it.

We should instead try to live every day of our lives promoting equality and tolerance, not just one day out of the year.
