Gymnastics team remains confident

Suffering its seventh loss against eight wins last Saturday, the Ball State gymnastics team hopes to get back on track this week. The Cardinals travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., Sunday for a tri-meet with Mid-American Conference foe Western Michigan and Southeast Missouri State.

The Cardinals have come up short against Kent State (196.00-191.950) and Ohio State (195.5-192.875) in their last two meets. The Cardinals' roster had been plagued with injuries until last week.

With the team's constant improvement and the rejuvenation of its roster, the Cards look to fare better on Sunday.

"I think we've improved one hundred percent," sophomore Kelli Davis said. "Our score as a team keeps going up, and we've really improved in every area, especially bars, where we struggled early in the season."

Despite two straight losses, Ball State is still a confident team; it already owns bragging rights going into Sunday's meet. The Cards defeated Western Michigan (190.125-186.775) in their first meet of the season, and they also defeated Southeast Missouri State (192.975-192.425) earlier in the year.

To top the team's wave of confidence, the Cardinals also had an honor bestowed upon them. For the second time this season junior Quiana Williams took home the MAC player of the week. The junior from Gary, Ind., took home the all-around last weekend against 24th-ranked Ohio State. Williams also ranks third all-time in school history with a 9.875 score. She also owns nine top-15 scores at Ball State on the beam, vault and floor.

Williams helped lead last year's team to the MAC Championship, the first conference title in school history, and a goal for this year's team.

"We lost a lot of key seniors after last year, but we still have the confidence, and we know we can do it," Davis said.

The road to the MAC championship is long, but it begins by winning conference meets on the road, which is exactly what the Cardinals will have to do this weekend.
