Gymnastics team fails to gain victory

Despite perfecting routines, team loses third road meet.

For the third time in three weeks, the Ball State gymnastics team failed to pick up a victory on the road. The Cardinals (192.725) fell short to Mid-American Conference opponent Western Michigan (194.325) and Southeast Missouri State (193.475) at Sunday's triangular meet in Kalamazoo. Both teams defeated the Cardinals earlier this season.

"We really didn't have that bad of a meet," said senior Kim Cromer. "We had some good things. We just had to count a few falls on bars, and that was our main thing." -รก

Despite the fact that the Cardinals are working on perfecting their routines toward a second consecutive MAC title, the team has lost three consecutive road meets, and its record has dropped to 8-9 overall this season.

"There's no sense of panic," Cromer said.

"It's just the middle of the season, so we're starting to put new things in, and that's why we're getting some of our falls. We're trying to make us harder to beat so we'll be ready for the MAC (Championship)."

Last week's MAC gymnast of the week, Quiana Williams, led the way for the Cardinals Sunday. The junior finished first in the all-around with a career-high score of 39.175. Williams placed first on the vault with a 9.775 and also managed a couple of second-place ties on bars (9.850) and on the beam (9.825).

Also standing out for the Cards were Cromer and Amy Bodus. The two seniors tied for third on the floor exercise with identical scores of 9.800. Bodus also took third in the all-around, finishing with a 38.325.

Ball State has finished three weeks of road meets and will be back in Irving Gymnasium Friday for the last home meet of the season. Friday's meet against Illinois State and Illinois-Chicago is senior night and will mark the final home meet for the seniors. Friday's meet starts at 7 p.m.
