Depth plays major factor in BSU's two victories

Men win 5 of 13 events, down Ohio and Toledo

With two wins on Saturday, the men's swimming and diving team equaled its highest win total since the 1991-1992 season.

Ball State beat Ohio 157-84 and defeated Toledo 128-95 in Athens, Ohio. The Cardinals won five of the 13 events. Freshman Kurtis Leer won the 200 freestyle, sophomore Zach Hall the 500 free and sophomore Josh Willer the 200 breaststroke. The Cardinals were also victorious in the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay.

Head coach Bob Thomas said earlier in the week that some of the swimmers were suffering from the flu but were able to win the meet despite the adversity.

"It was a great meet," he said. "Even with our sick guys the people that were not sick were able to come through for us and do a dandy job."

Thomas cited his team's overall depth as a reason why the Cardinals defeated Toledo. Ball State had 21 members, while Toledo had 13 and was without its only diver, giving the Cardinals 18 points automatically.

"The depth of the team is what makes the biggest difference," Thomas said. "When we did lose a race we were able to go two, three or two, three, four, which takes away the win. And when we did win a race it was usually by someone that has not been winning that race."

Thomas said this year's team is hard to compare to past teams, but he said it will continue to get better.

"This team is so young," he said. "They have done very well this season, probably better than expected from the beginning. I think their potential is so much more, and the future looks very promising."
