Cards find good in bad

Several Ball State athletes qualify for MAC Championships.

The men's indoor track team saw a glimpse of bright performances during an otherwise average weekend at the Smith and Barney Invitational in Indianapolis.

"I thought we were a little flat this weekend," said head coach Jim Sprecher. "It was a combination of going into it a little tired, and we were basically there from about noon to 9:30 (p.m.)."

Pole vaulter Paul Panning remained undefeated with a winning jump of 16 feet 4 34 inches, outdoing even a couple of unattached professional athletes.

Weight thrower Kyle Cleaver has improved significantly this year, Sprecher said, posting a Ball State season's best throw of 52 feet 2 34 inches at the Smith Barney Invitational.

Victor Johnson scored in three events for the Cardinals including the 60-meter, 200-meter and long jump. High jumper Ben Daniel took first place in his event with a 6 foot 9 inch jump, a personal best for him.

The Cardinals had several athletes qualify for the MAC Championships, which take place Feb. 28 at Kent State.

Athletes who qualified for the MAC Championships at the Smith and Barney Invitational include: Brady Edwards and Nick Panozzo in the pole vault, Patrick Bush, who placed 4th in the 400-meter with a time of 50.02 and Steve Schilling in the 3,000-meter.

Ball State will get a chance to familiarize itself with Kent State's course this Saturday when the team travels to Ohio for the Kent State Invitational.
