Volleyball opens with 2 wins

The offense was not clicking consistently, but the Ball State men's volleyball team dropped just one set in sweeping George Mason and Concordia at Worthen Arena over the weekend to open the season.

After downing the Patriots 30-23, 30-13, 27-30, 30-20 on Saturday, the Cardinals took Concordia in straight sets, 30-13, 30-27, 30-28. Ball State (2-0) has now won 25 consecutive home matches.

"It was a good start for us" head coach Joel Walton said. "George Mason and Concordia will be two of the better programs on the East Coast this year, so to beat them is good.

"George Mason beat us at their place last year, so I was hoping the guys would come out with a sense of urgency and atone for that."

The Cards hit a respectable .306 against the Patriots, including .538 in the second game, but could manage just .135.

Fortunately, BSU's defense was strong and its opponents had more errors. George Mason's hitting percentage was .000 and Concordia's a mere -.029.

Junior Jari Delgado (17 kills), senior Matt Denmark (16) and senior Kyle Weindel (15) had 10 kills each in the first match.

Junior setter Keith Schunzel dished out 43 assists against GM and 66 overall, also adding a combined five service aces.

Denmark tallied 12 blocks and Schunzel 11, while Josh Hall had 16 digs and Schunzel 13.
