Rec | Survival of the fittest

A survivor is usually thought to be the last person standing or the person who shines in any survival of the fittest game.

BSU Rec wants students to test themselves with the Survivor Challenge. The Survivor program was first offered last semester and will continue this semester.

"The Survivor Challenge is an incentive program to commit to BSU-Fit classes through the BSU-Fit Recreation Services Aerobics Program. The more classes a person participates in, the greater the reward," said Andrea Eaker, Graduate Assistant for BSU-Fit.

-áIn order to complete the Survivor Challenge, a participant must attend at least 15 classes in a 10-week period. If a person attends 35 or more classes in the 10 weeks, he will receive the grand prize; 25 or more classes earns the second place prize; and 15 or more classes earns the third place prize.

Prizes have not been determined for this semester.-á Last semester, the grand prize winners were given a Survivor Challenge t-shirt and a free session with a personal trainer.

During the fall semester Survivor Challenge, 103 people participated in the program. Of the 103 participants, 17 people received the third place prize, 12 received second place prizes, and 11 people became ultimate survivors by receiving the grand prize.

"The Survivor Challenge is designed to help aerobic participants stick to a regular exercise program by rewarding them for the number of classes they participate in. It provides a motivation factor for participants to develop and maintain a high state of health and physical fitness through support and incentive prizes," said Eaker.

Patricia Boone, junior, teaches BSU-Rec's Friday evening Instructor's Choice class. Boone mentions the Survivor Challenge in her classes and sees the program as "our way to keep them accountable."-á Boone thinks the program is a good way to "challenge people" and let them "explore the benefits of working out."

Boone keeps her class participant's returning by trying to be personable and by remembering the participants' names.

Boone's favorite part of teaching the class is "when we get to the point when everyone can accomplish a certain move all together. It's beautiful."

Anne Turpin, junior, was able to complete the Survivor Challenge last semester earning the third place prize. Turpin teamed up with her cousin to attend the BSU-Rec classes. Turpin liked being involved with the Survivor Challenge because it "would make us go every week if we had some goal."-á The program gave Turpin a reason to attend a class weekly. Turpin said "I would have put it off."

Turpin usually attended the Funk class or the Butts and Guts class. The upbeat atmosphere and peer instructors were one of Turpin's favorite parts of the classes.

Turpin has not yet committed to another semester of the Survivor Challenge, but plans to look into it.

Prospective participants can pick up a registration sheet for the Survivor Challenge at any of the BSU-Fit classes or in Irving Gym room 201 where BSU-Fit passes can also be purchased. The Challenge begins January 19 and ends April 19.
