Men's coach pleased with team's performance

The men's track and field team continued its season Saturday at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette. Of the 14 events, the Cardinals finished first in four and took top five finishes in 12.

Head coach Jim Sprecher was pleased with the team's performance and thought there was a definite sign of progress.

"I thought it was an improvement upon last week," Sprecher said. "It was a pretty good team effort, meaning that in most areas our kids came through and performed well."

The non-team scoring competition featured familiar top-place finishers for the Cardinals, including pole vaulter Paul Panning, who beat his school record he set one week ago at the Ball State Open. Panning is the only Cardinal to vault over 17 feet, including both indoor and outdoor competition.

Also finishing first at the Purdue Invitational was Steve Schilling in the 800-meter. Schilling also placed second in the 1600-meter. The Ball State 4x400 relay team, anchored by Scott Allen, was another top finisher.

Both Jesse Davis and Aaron Hoover won the 1600-meter the 5000-meter, respectively. Hoover's finish in the 5000-meter was a personal record.

Victor Johnson made his debut in the triple jump for the Cardinals, finishing second. Johnson also improved upon last week's performance at the Ball State Open in the long jump.

"It was a continuation of last week and each week out we expect to see those performances to get better," coach Sprecher said.

The next meet for the Cardinals will take them to South Bend when they participate in the Notre Dame Triangular Friday.
