The women's swimming and diving team begins the latter half of its 2002-03 campaign on Saturday against Big Ten Michigan State Spartans. The Spartans (2-4 overall) will be the largest program -- and only Big Ten team - Ball State (10-1) competes against this season.
The team has not lost a dual meet in more than two months, as its last and only defeat came on Nov. 2, when it faced defending Mid-American Conference champion Miami.
Saturday's contest will hold special significance for head coach Laura Seibold-Caudill, as she is a 1976 graduate of Michigan State University.
"They are going to be tough to beat," Seibold-Caudill said. "They are kind of weak in the (butter)fly and the individual medley, so we must capitalize and do well in those events. We must do our best to hang with them."
Spartans' head coach Jim Lutz told Michigan State's athletics Web site that Ball State should be a challenge for his program. "It's always a tough competition on the second day," he said.
The Cardinals continued what has become a routine schedule for them by taking part in extended five-hour practices during parts of Christmas break.
Seibold-Caudill said the added training over break should help, rather than hurt, the team in the long run.
"We trained extremely hard over Christmas," the 24-year coach said. "That will probably give us a base as we head into more training. We have to maintain this pace over the next four weeks."
