Our View: Reassigned

AT ISSUE: Former Ball State football coach Bill Lynch ponders future, could pursue other coaching positions.

Bill Lynch has been fired.

He will be "reassigned within the university," but he has been fired.

It is obvious that Ball State no longer has a use for Lynch. There is only one reason why he is being kept around: money. Lynch's contract doesn't expire until Jan. 31, 2004, nearly 14 months from now. The bottom line is Ball State doesn't want to have to buy out that contract.

If the university were to fire Lynch, it would still have to pay the remainder of the deal. Reassigning him means Ball State can still receive some return for its dollar. The problem is, athletic director Bubba Cunningham hasn't announced where Lynch will be assigned. He could be painting the checkerboard pattern in the end zone for all we know.

Lynch doesn't have to take that kind of treatment. Even though he wasn't the best fit at Ball State, he is still a marketable coach. He shouldn't have to play second fiddle for a school that just removed him from first chair.

Lynch should go out and find another head coaching position.

Baylor, Houston, Texas A&M, Tulsa, Utah and Wyoming all have head coaching vacancies. Nebraska, one of the nation's most tradition-rich programs just fired three assistants.

Go out and get one of those jobs and resign from Ball State. Sure, the contract will not be bought out, but an eight-year head coach should not have to take a demotion within his own program.
