At Issue:Campus comedy troupe to perform, donate proceeds to Animal Rescue Fund

For Absolunacy, Ball State University's self-proclaimed premier comedy troupe, philanthropy is as important as humor.

The troupe will perform its special blend of improvisation, sketches and songs tonight in Pruis Hall at 8.

Admission is $2, and all proceeds will go to the Animal Rescue Fund (ARF).

"ARF is an animal shelter with a no-kill policy. It is completely financed by donations, but they need support," wrote columnist Ben McShane in the Nov. 13 edition of the Daily News.

This isn't the first time Absolunacy has helped a worthy cause. Former members explained just how much Absolunacy has done for various charities in its 11-year history.

Alumnus Brian Gentrup said Absolunacy has donated proceeds to such notable causes as the Sept. 11 Fund and Habitat for Humanity, along with regular participation in food drives and free performances.

"Improv is all about giving -- to fellow troupe members and to the community," Gentrup said.

The good will and immense talent of the current cast delights Absolunacy founder and Ball State alumnus Dave Baker, who started the troupe in 1991.

"It's nice to see that my baby is keeping with the tradition of philanthropy as well as continuing to entertain the campus community," Baker said. "It makes Papa proud."

Neither ARF nor Absolunacy could exist without the support of the community. For ARF, all one needs to bring to the show is $2. For Absolunacy, all one needs to bring is a sense of humor.

McShane added, "For $8, you and three friends could go see Absolunacy, or you could go see a movie by yourself for the same price. The choice is clear."

So drop everything and run -- do not walk -- to Pruis Hall, and be ready to laugh until it hurts.
