Our View: Playing Frogger

AT ISSUE: Muncie law prohibits pedestrian warning signs and possible crosswalk on Tillotson Avenue

Students will have to continue playing their game of Human Frogger while walking to vehicles parked in the overflow lot along Tillotson Avenue because safety measures for pedestrians would violate Muncie law.

According to an announcement by SGA Senator Katie Wiese during the SGA meeting on Nov. 20, "Because the site is not an established intersection, it is against the law to install a crosswalk."

Wiese said Kevin Kenyon, vice-president of facilities planning and management, told her in a phone call during Senate that flashing lights and pedestrian warnings would not be installed because the stop lights at the two nearby intersections were synchronized.

"It's disappointing that the university is more concerned with the logistics of doing this than the safety of its students," Parliamentarian Ben Tietz said. "I encourage Senate to keep working on this. It doesn't mean we have to give up."

On Nov. 13, SGA voted to approve legislation for the installation of a flashing yellow light, despite the current objective to expand BSU shuttle service to the overflow lot. Some Senators believe the traffic light legislation would negate the shuttle service requests.

However, now that Muncie law has come into play, it is all the more crucial for shuttle service to be expanded. Unless the city of Muncie is interested in a walking bridge, it doesn't appear that we will see any changes along Tillotson Avenue anytime soon.
