Key weekend meets mark men's swimming, diving calendar

The men's swimming and diving team looks to continue its undefeated season with two home meets this weekend.

Friday the Cardinals swim against Butler University and Valparaiso University in a double-dual meet at 6 p.m. Saturday they compete in a dual meet against Western Kentucky University at 10 a.m. Both meets are at Lewellen Aquatic Center.

The meet on Friday will be against some of the same competition the Cardinals saw last weekend.

"It is very similar competition to the likes of Xavier, UIC, and Western [Illinois]," head coach Bob Thomas said.-á"They are all very similar programs, but I'm not going into it looking at it as on easy meet."

Thomas said his team would not look past Friday's meet to the undefeated Western Kentucky team coming in on Saturday.

"I think they have enough experience to focus on one race at a time, one meet at a time," he said.

Thomas said Saturday's meet against Western Kentucky would be the toughest meet so far for the Cardinals.

"Western is a very competitive team," he said.-á"They've beaten us the last four years now. We're the underdog."

The home-pool edge figures to be a factor for the Cardinals, according to Thomas.

"We definitely have a home-pool advantage here," he said.-á"We don't have to travel, and we know the environment, the loudness of the crowd.-áAll those make for a great meet."

The two weekend meets concludes a stretch of four meets in nine days for the Cardinals. Thomas said mental fatigue would be more of a factor than physical fatigue for his team at the end of the string of meets.

"Training is a lot more difficult than the meets," Thomas said. They have to enjoy going head to head with people who are faster than them.-áThey're not suffering any with all these meets.-áWhat it affects in the long run is it takes a lot mentally to get up for competitions."

With wins this weekend the Cardinals could push their overall record to 9-0, which would equal their highest win total since the 1995-1996 season, but Thomas said records do not mean much to him.

"Records mean more to statisticians then they do to me," he said.-á"I look at the individual competition.-áIt's nice for the team to be undefeated at this time, but I'm not letting it go to my head."222.-+*+â-äm. swimming 11.21.02DNEditorial222SORT-ó+â-ä2AUDT
