Cards depth is the key

The Ball State women's swimming and divingteam is heading into this weekend's dual meet on a winning streak.

The Cardinals are 7-1 overall after sweeping four meets over IUPUI, Western Illinois, the University of Illinois-Chicago, and Xavier last weekend.

"It is fun when you win," head coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said. "It has all been in the way the girls have approached every meet, and they have been positive."

The Cardinals are at home for this weekend's dual meet on Friday when the Cardinals face Butler and Valparaiso. They will return to action Saturday against a highly competitive team in Western Kentucky.

"Western Kentucky is always competitive," sophomore swimmer Karla Bailey said. "We have a lot more depth to beat them this year."

The Cardinals were defeated in last year's meet against Western Kentucky and are looking to settle the score.

"Western Kentucky is tough, they come after dual meets, but we can beat them this year," Seibold-Caudill said. "We are pretty equal across the board."

The Cardinals are facing a tough challenge this weekend, and with coming into the competition on a winning streak the atmosphere in the Lewellen Aquatic Center is nothing but positive.

"We are on a winning streak and it's a really good thing for us," Bailey said. "We are really positive, and we just have to do our best."

The Cardinals haven't suffered a loss since Nov. 2 against Mid-American Conference rivals Miami RedHawks, and Seibold-Caudill said they are looking to keep it that way.

In preparation for the upcoming weekend, the Cardinals are obviously focusing on both meets, but according to Seibold-Caudill the emphasis is on Saturday's meet.

"We have to be fired up and they have to want to win it," said Seibold-Caudill.

The Cardinals are hopeful to sweep the competition this weekend, and keep the momentum going at their next meet, the Akron Invitational on Dec. 5.

The Cardinals are 2-1 against MAC competition.

"We need everybody to step up this weekend, it can't be a one person meet," Seibold-Caudill said. "It has to come from everyone."
