A Message From The East: Changes necessary to improve services available on campus

Whenever there is a football game there is a parking problem. If you want to go to the library or to the computer lab at Robert Bell building on those Saturdays, just forget it. From late morning to early evening you can never find a spot to park your car on campus.

Attending football games might be fun for some of us, but there are serious students who have projects to work on and assignments to do. Providing fun for a small group of students shouldn't be a bother and a waste of time for other students who don't like football.

Even though Ball State provides advanced communication services, the situation could be better. There are not enough campus telephones around, for example. This problem can be very serious in emergency cases.

There should be a campus phone in every building and on every floor of the library. After all, not all students have cellular phones to call anytime, anywhere. More campus telephones would provide students with more convenience.

Many students complained about the limited work hours of the library. Closing at 6 p.m. on Fridays and 5 p.m. on Saturdays remain unjustified. I attended Indiana State, which is a smaller school than Ball State, and the library there doesn't close until 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Students are expected to wear heavy clothes in the next three months. But what happen to you when you enter a building and find it terribly warm? Are you supposed to take your clothes off? Temperature in buildings shouldn't exceed 60 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid upsetting situations.

Some students exercise their right to smoke cigarettes right outside the buildings. They don't realize that by doing so they turn buildings' entrances into contaminated areas which disturbs other students who don't smoke. This is a request to smokers to let the rest of us breathe fresh air each time we step in and out a building.

Shuttle services are a big help to students across the campus. When students are waiting for the bus in a rainy and windy day they are in a miserable situation. Why doesn't Ball State consider building shields on the few bus stops on McKinley Avenue? Such a small project will help us stay warm while waiting.

I don't intend to sound too critical. I'm proud to be a Ball State student. Hopefully what I mentioned here will help improve the different services on campus.
