Woman's Soccer to play IUPUI, Miami (Ohio) this weekend

Another big weekend is in store for the Ball State women's soccer team as it will host in-state rival IUPUI today before taking on the Mid-American Conference front-runner Miami, Sunday.

The Cardinals are currently in second place in the league with a league mark of 6-2 and 9-3 overall. Ball State has won five of its last six games and 10 of its last 12.

Miami is one game ahead of BSU with a conference record of 7-1 and 9-2-1 overall. The Redhawks are also the defending MAC Tournament champions and have competed in the championship game each of the last three seasons.

Both Ball State and Miami suffered setbacks last weekend to Central Michigan.

IUPUI will come into today's match with a record of 2-9-2 overall.

According to head coach Ron Rainey, the Cardinals are inching closer to their goal of playing host to a MAC tournament game with every victory, a feat in which only the top four finishers will realize.

"We'll look at this weekend the way we look at any other weekend," Rainey said. "One of our biggest keys is having good practices all weekend, then playing well in the first game, whether it's a conference match or not."

Miami boasts two of the league's top scorers over the last three seasons in seniors Danielle Berkemeier and Andrea Cunningham. The duo make up two out of the three top career scorers in MAC history, and Cunningham is the reigning MAC player of the year.

"Miami has been the best team in the league the last couple of years," Rainey said. "They will come in with a lot of confidence, but it'll be an excellent chance to measure ourselves against the top team in the league."

Rainey also said that the team needs to focus on the task at hand and concentrate on what they've worked on in practice.

"We go into every game with the mindset that it is the most important game of the year," Rainey said. "We need to go in and compete and put ourselves in a position to win. If it happens, great, and if not we still have three more league games to meet our goals.

"This will be a huge game in that we are playing the best team in the league, but more or less it won't be any different from any of the other MAC games we've played this year."
