Red Ribbon

At Issue: Elementary students interacting with drug-free role models

Area high school students have been making an extra effort this week in the name of a good cause.

Red Ribbon week was kicked off Tuesday morning at the Community Civic Center by Delaware County PRIDE youth members. The students spent the week promoting a drug-free lifestyle to local elementary school children through the use of dances and skits, among other activities. The purpose was to get the message out to students early, before they have to face the pressures of middle and high schools.

Red Ribbon Week began after a federal drug enforcement agent was kidnapped, tortured and murdered while undercover in Mexico in 1985. Groups wore red ribbons out of frustration for the agent's death. Today, Red Ribbon Week is a national event.

After 17 years, the mission of Red Ribbon has not been lost, even in Muncie. While these students will likely never know the effect their efforts have left, it most certainly is there.

Students in elementary school remember their teachers and they remember their friends, but they also remember the big kids who came to help them. They remember what is said about what things are like in middle school and in high school, because that's where they want to be.

This behavior in local youth should be encouraged, just as Mayor Dan Canan did during Tuesday's kickoff. Also, these high school students can serve as an example to the members of the college crowd who are not involved in activities such as these.

If elementary students get excited when the high school kids drop by, just wait until the college crowd shows up.,,2(I-editorial10.25DNEditorial,,2SORT-¼+â-ä2AUDT
