Playboy model, drag show kick off PROUD week

Cross-dressing men and a Playboy Playmate are just two of the events lined up for Spectrum's week of PROUD activities.

Formerly known as Coming Out Week, the aim of People Realizing Our Unique Differences week is to celebrate the differences of individuals both gay and straight.

"We're trying to bring the whole campus in on it," said Tabitha Rohrer, external vice president of Spectrum. "It's not just for gay people and their friends."

All events will take place in the Student Center and are free and open to the public.

PROUD week kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Ballroom with a drag show.

Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender history and lingo will be discussed in an interactive presentation at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Forum room.

Spectrum's weekly meeting will be held at 8 p.m. Monday in the Forum room.

Rebekka Armstrong, a Playboy Playmate, will be speaking about living with HIV at 6:30 Tuesday in Cardinal hall. Following Armstrong, comedian Eddie Sarfaty will speak at 8 p.m.

Spectrum hopes that more than just its group members will attend this week's various events.

"A lot of people think that only gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender people can participate, but this is something for everybody," said Rohrer.

In addition, Sabrina Sojourner, the first open lesbian to be elected to Congress, will speak at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Cardinal Hall.

Speaking about combating homophobia on campus and coming out in a fraternity is Shane Windmeyer, co-editor of "Out on Fraternity Row" will present at 8 p.m. Thursday in Cardinal Hall.

Gary Nelson, president of Spectrum, said he hopes the campus will come together through these events while having fun.

"It's our time to let the community know we exist," he said. "PROUD says it all. We're trying to show there can be unity between every person regardless of sexual orientation."

Rounding out the week's event, "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," a movie about an aspiring rock star who receives a sex change operation, will show at 8 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Ball Room.

A dance will be held at 9 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Ball Room and Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) will hold their weekly meeting at 5 p.m. Oct. 13 in the Music Room.
