Career Center hosts job-search seminar

Upperclassmen can learn about how employers look at entry-level candidates

The Career Center will host their Job-Search Seminar Saturday to help upperclassmen learn about the job search process from an employer's point of view.

The seminar will begin at 9 a.m. with keynote speaker Lynne Elson, the division human resource manager for the seminar's sponsor, Steak n' Shake, Inc. Elson will speak on what employers look for when choosing entry-level candidates and will provide job-search tips on writing resumes, preparing for interviews and presenting oneself professionally.

After Elson's presentation, students have three different session options focusing on full-time employment, internships and graduate school preparation.

Those focusing on full-time employment may sign up for sessions on interviewing, networking, portfolio preparation and professional image and etiquette.

Students interested in internships will be offered two sessions focusing on their questions, including a panel discussion with Elson, Robert Tyler, who is an employer of Tyler Financial, and two former interns.

In the graduate school session, students will lean about admission, testing, financial aid, and available campus resources.

"Searching for that first full-time job is a very stressful part of a student's life. Attending the seminar will allow students to enter the competitive world with more confidence and a better sense of direction," said Tara King, assistant director for the Career Center and the coordinator of the seminar.

King said many times students are not as prepared as they should be for the job or internship search.

"Today's graduates will be competing for jobs not only with each other, but also with the thousands of skilled and experienced people who have lost their jobs due to downsizing and layoffs," King said. "It's a much more competitive market than we're used to.

Pat Zeabart, an instructor in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, said she requires the students in her professional development class to attend the seminar.

"For an entire morning the students can focus on themselves, their career paths and acquiring skills needed to be successful in a competitive internship or job market," Zeabart said.

The Career Center encourages students to pre-register online at the Career Center Web site by 4 p.m. today in order to ensure a spot at the seminar. Students may also register on Saturday from 8:30 to 9 a.m. at the Student Center.

Another seminar will be offered in February with the addition of a focus on the job search process for teachers. In addition, the professional etiquette dinner on Nov. 12 and the practice interview day on Nov. 21 will offer students interview techniques, dining tips for interviews and networking contacts.((2$+â-Ç+â-ÿ+â-ú*F
