Ball State to compete in largest tourney of the season at Wolverine Invitational

Seventeen competitors is all that will stand between the men's golf team and greatness, when the Cardinals travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., Saturday to participate in the largest meet of its fall season.

After settling into a hotel, the team will prepare to wage war with a handful of familiar opponents and several fresh rivals on the golf course. Ball State has seen Michigan, Indiana, Miami (Ohio), Western Kentucky, UNC Greensboro, and Eastern Michigan's 2002-03 programs. However, the team has not competed against the likes of Ohio Wesleyan, Seton Hall, St. John's, Xavier, or Wisconsin.

Earlier in the year, head coach Mike Fleck said that it should be the most important meet of the fall season for his team. He still regards that as being true now, since the year has progressed.

"It's going to be the most important matchup of the fall," Fleck said. "It's a good mix of teams with several Mid American Conference schools and Big Ten teams. I think these guys probably have a good idea of how everyone is competing now after seeing them earlier in the season."

The Cards hope they will not have to deal with any odd circumstances in Ann Arbor like they did last week at the Northern Invitational in Bloomington.

It was then that Kenny Cook had to sit out of the meet, as he dealt with stomach flu. The team was forced to golf with only four athletes as a result, and did not have the luxury of throwing out the high score from each round.

"With Kenny healthy, I think we have a good chance of finishing in the upper-third at Michigan," Fleck said.

Cook, the team's senior leader will be back competing on Saturday. He will be joined by Lance Scholl, Brandon Boomsma, Justin Cross, and Mike Kasula during the three-round invite.

Kasula, who is a sophomore from Hermitage, Pennsylvania earned his first starting spot of the season by placing high on Monday and Tuesday during qualifying rounds.__>+-¼ E-¦Imgolfpreview 10.4DNEditorial,-¼b1-¦+â-ï2mgolfpreview 10.4DNEditorial__>SORT+â-å+â-ä>AUDT
