The women's golf team opened up its fall season of play in the Cardinal Classic at the Players Club in Yorktown Saturday morning.
The Cardinals finished eighth in the 15-team tournament. The team shot a 323 on Saturday, then improved in the latter round on Sunday with a score of 316, putting its two-day total at 639.
Mid-American Conference foe Eastern Michigan won the Invitational, finishing with a score of 610.
According to head coach Shelley Sanders, competition was tough throughout the event as several teams that were very deep in talent competed.
"It was one of the toughest fields we will see all year," Sanders said. "Eastern Michigan has always been a good team, but I was a little surprised with how well Ferris State did. Considering the strength of the field, I was not surprised with how we finished."
"The competition was tough," junior Lisa Robertson said. "There were a lot of low scores posted in this tournament. No one was lacking out there."
Ferris State, a Division II school, located in Big Rapids, Michigan finished 3rd in the Cardinal Classic with a team score of 618, only three shots behind Eastern Illinois.
Junior Laura Adkins, had the best individual score for Ball State, shooting a 75 on day one, and a 79 on Sunday, finishing with a 154. However, Adkins was not in the starting five and her total did not figure into the Cards overall team score.
"Laura certainly had the lowest individual score for us," head coach Sanders said. "She also had one of the lowest totals we have ever had in a tournament."
Due to Adkins' performance, she earned a qualifying score for the next tournament and will travel with the team as a part of the starting field to Michigan next weekend.
Freshman golfer Carmen Bodine finished first for the Cardinal starters, tying for 13th overall, with a 153. Junior Lisa Robertson tied for 20th, shooting a 155.
"The first day I was not real happy with my play," Robertson said. "(But) on Sunday I rebounded and was on-line to shoot under par. I got a little nervous towards the end though, and finished just two over."
