Muncie and Ball State police reported to a call of a large fight on the 100 block of Calvert Avenue early Saturday morning, which ended with gunshots and the arrests of a Ball State student and another man, according to police reports.

Police arrested Mario A. Jackson, 22, 395 Drangle St., Memphis, Tenn., at 1:44 a.m. at Calvert Avenue and Jackson Street on charges of possession of cocaine, possession of a handgun without a permit, public intoxication, disorderly conduct and resisting law enforcement.

Ball State student Antoine Parnell Finley, 21, 4548 W. Bethel Ave., Apt. 113, was arrested at 2:06 a.m. at Celia Avenue and Gilbert Street on charges of public intoxication and minor consumption. He turned 21 Monday.

Two Ball State bike patrol officers responded to 100 S. Calvert Ave. in reference to a large fight reported by Muncie police dispatch, police reports said. As the officers approached the intersection of Calvert Avenue and Main Street, they saw several people standing in front of and at the back of a car arguing.

A man standing near the vehicle pulled out a gun and fired three shots, according to reports. As the shots were fired, police could see several people "ducking and trying to get out of the area," reports said.

Reports did not identify any victims from the gunshots.

While pursuing some of the people through an alley behind a Village Pantry, police reports said officers saw a gray-colored Lincoln Navigator flee from the scene.

Ball State police then saw two black men run out of the alley and try to get into the Navigator, according to reports. Ball State police identified themselves and told the two men to stop. The two men ran, going east down Jackson Street.

Muncie police arrived at the scene and tackled Jackson after chasing him to Calvert Avenue and Jackson Street, reports said.

During the chase, police reports said Muncie officers saw Jackson drop a baggie, which contained 13.5 grams of cocaine. When searching Jackson, police reports said officers found a .22-caliber handgun in his right rear pocket.

Ball State police lost sight of the second man after he turned onto Martin Street from Jackson Street.

According to reports, at 1:43 a.m., Muncie police located the Navigator, which had fled from the scene, and pulled it over at Cole Avenue and Gilbert Street. Police removed Finley, the driver, from the vehicle and handcuffed him.

Finley told police he was at a party at 113 N. Calvert Ave. and had three beers. He said he thought he heard a fight outside and as he walked outdoors, he saw a group of people and heard several gunshots. According to police reports, he said he saw Ball State police arrive and ran to his vehicle, fleeing the scene in it.

Ball State police found a spent 9 mm cartridge lying in the street directly in front of the house at 100 S. Calvert Ave., according to reports. Another spent 9 mm casing was found about 20 feet away lying in the middle of the road.

When police searched Jackson, they found a spent shell casing in the .22-calibur handgun he had in his pocket.

Ball State police talked to a home owner in the area, who told police she and several friends were having a large party. She told police she had placed fliers around campus advertising the party, which was primarily for Ball State students. Non-students showed up to the party, the home owner told police, and several of the other guests told them to leave.

As some of the non-students were leaving there was a fight outside and someone yelled, 'He has a gun,' the home owner told police. Someone at the party then called 911 on a cell phone and reported the fight to Muncie police.
