Plan a party without breaking the bank

Students shop for food and drinks with their wallets in mind.

Throwing a party takes much thinking and planning. Hosts must figure out decorations, an invitation list, where to have the party, and of course what refreshments and snacks to serve.

When throwing a party most college students head to Wal-Mart for refreshments and food.

"I always go to Wal-Mart because they have the cheapest stuff," freshman Amber Feldman said.

Other top places to shop for parties include Aldi's, Meijer and Marsh Market.

Some students, however, opt to take advantage of the dining halls such as Out of Bounds in LaFollette and the Marketplace in Noyer to shop for party munchies.

"I've been shopping at the dining halls and using my dining plus money for awhile now. It's a good way to get food without having to spend the extra cash that I might be wasting if I don't use it," sophomore Melissa Sidor said.

Freshman Andy Wirtz disagrees. "I would never use my dining plus money to buy food for a party. It's my money that I use for my meals. I worked hard for that money."

So now that you know where to shop, what do you buy nowadays for parties? Snack food such as chips, sun chips, pretzels, chips and salsa, and Cheetos are always a big hit for snack items. As for refreshments, students enjoy any Pepsi-products, Sprite, lemonade, water, or fruit Punch to drink.

"I also like having non-alcoholic daiquiris or margaritas at parties," said Chris Oswald.

If you are tired of serving the same old snacks and drinks, try these suggestions. Instead of serving chips and pretzels, buy or rent a popcorn popping machine for large parties. The online site, www.htexpress.com offers many different styles of popping machines; some as low as $39.95.

For smaller parties, Subway's party subs are a big hit. Choose any kind of bread, meat and cheese, and they will put all the toppings and condiments on the side. This leaves party goers without having to argue over what one person likes and one person dislikes. It is also cheaper than buying pizzas to serve the same amount of people.
