Our View: Voting Made Easy

AT ISSUE: UNIVERSITY ENCOURAGES VOTER TURNOUT BY ADDING REGISTRATION LINK TO WEB SITE

With the recent addition of a voter registration link to its Web site, Ball State has found a way to help students vote in their county of residence.

Brian Farber, assistant dean of students, said students who visit the university's Web site can link to the Indiana Secretary of State site for the electronic division. There, a voter registration form can be downloaded, including instructions on how to register to vote in their county of residence.

Kay Bales, associate vice president for student life, assisted Farber in setting up the registration link. She believes the link will be a strong encouragement to students wishing to register to vote.

"The university has been looking at ways that students in Indiana could vote. Obviously the Web site will be one such option," Bales said.

Obviously, this move accommodates students who do not have the time or means to go and register in their hometowns. Many students go home on weekends, but state and government offices are closed. Now, students have another option.

Registering to vote is only one step, however. Students still must take time to visit the polls on election day and exercise their right to vote. The university may not be able to make students vote, but the voting process just got a little easier.
