In honor of Sept. 11, the Interfraternity Council will be co-sponsoring a blood drive with the Indiana Blood Center in the balcony of Irving Gym from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.
"We want to do something for 9/1l," said Andy Fadel, philanthropy and community service chairman for IFC. "What happened a year ago reminded everyone we need to stick together."
Paul Hickner, a field representative for the Indiana Blood Center, said they are excepting a large turnout as the entire campus, as well as the Muncie community, is invited to give at the blood drive.
"I feel strongly we will have large turnout due to the patriotism," Hickner said. "Plus it's been so well advertised."
Hickner said there will be 10 beds available, and more at their disposal if needed.
Although this event is sponsored by fraternities, it is not at all limited to the greek community.
"We want to see people from the dorms, the community, faculty -- everyone," Fadel said.
As an incentive to encourage people to donate, IFC and the Indiana Blood Center will be giving free t-shirts to all who donate, as well as drinks and cookies.
Because today is Friday the 13th, IFC will be showing "Friday the 13th" while people wait to give blood.
Fadel said IFC is here to help people.
"We've been big on philanthropy in the past, and we are still doing our best to do good while we are here," Fadel said.
The week of Sept. 11 last year all philanthropic and community service organizations on campus came together to bring Ball State what they called the bucket drive. Fadel said that during this time $6,000 in donations were raised for the families and victims.
They also collected teddy bears for the children who lost parents due to the terrorist act. A large banner was displayed on the ground near Bracken Library which was open for signing.
After all the funds had been raised, the banner's signed, and the teddy bears collected, Fadel with 10 other Ball State students, drove to New York to deliver the collected items as a sign of gratitude toward all those who helped in the time of need.
Fadel said they were also invited to the "Late Show with David Letterman."
