Cards win conference opener

Record 4-2 overall after weekend games.

The women's soccer team split two games over the weekend, defeating Kent State 1-0 on Friday afternoon, and losing 3-2 to Toledo Sunday.

In the Mid-American Conference opener against Kent State, it was Eileen Weinheimer score in the 87th minute that gave the Cardinals the victory.

"I made a cut to the inside and saw the far post wide open," Weinheimer said. "I could tell it was going in as soon as I kicked it."

"We came out slow," she said, "but we needed to win this game to get us off to a good start."

"This is our conference," head coach Ron Rainey said. "At the end of the season, somebody's going to finish first and somebody will finish 13th, but there will be a lot of great games in between. It's always huge to start off the conference schedule with a win."

In the second match of the MAC season at Toledo, Ball State fell behind early in the second half and was never really able to recover.

The Cardinals found themselves trailing 1-0 after Toledo's Robin Davidson scored to give the Rockets the lead 36 minutes into the first half. Kate Nadalin evened the score minutes later on an unassisted goal just before halftime.

The match was decided in the second half, with Toledo scoring in the both the 48th and 49th minutes to take the 3-1 lead. Ball State's Ehren Reagor scored seconds later, setting up the final score 3-2.

The loss dropped the Cards to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the MAC

"It's a disappointing loss," Rainey said. "We battled back after falling behind 1-0 and we had our chances to score. We lost the battle of winning balls and clearing balls, and that will be something we'll have to work on next week.

"There will be many matches like this in our league this year. We need to learn from this and become a better team, and it's still early in the league race."
