Cards to host Indiana State at first home football game

After a long awaited return of what used to be Ball State's biggest rivalry, Indiana State will come to Muncie Saturday for the first home football game of the season.

This will be the first time the the two schools have played since 1991. The last time the two teams faced off, the Cardinals came out on 14-10, which was the score of Indiana State's first game this season against Cumberland, which they won. Overall, Ball State leads the series 36-23-1.

"This is a good game for us, and throughout the state of Indiana," head coach Bill Lynch said.

Along with the rivalry comes familiarity as well. Indiana State recruits a lot of players from Indiana, increasing the chances that players faced each other in during their high school career.

"Because there are so many guys on both teams that played against each other in high school, quite a few played with each other in high school," Lynch said. "There's some bragging rights there."

The Cardinals are coming off of their loss to Missouri last weekend in their season-opener. Losing 41-6 to the Tigers, the team had few bright spots come from the game. Senior tailback Marcus Merriweather came out of the game with a 115 yards rushing, but fumbled twice. Quarterback Talmadge Hill went 15-20 for 126 yards passing, as well as 11 yards rushing.

Lynch and the Cardinals look to pick up their first win of the season Saturday before they go back on the road.

"This is a big game for both teams, and one I think our fans will enjoy because of the in-state rivalry," Lynch said. "It should be an exciting home opener for us."
