Cards shut-out weekend foes

The field hockey team shut out its competition this weekend, defeating Indiana University and Saint Louis University to improve its record to 4-1.

The Cardinals were overpowering on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field, out-scoring their opponents 9-0 while out-shooting them 55-8.

The more lop-sided of the two performances came Sunday when the team beat St. Louis 8-0. In the game, Ball State scored early and often.

Sophomore forward Holly Frantz scored the first goal just 2:53 into the game. The Cardinals went into halftime with a 6-0 lead.

Junior midfielder Afton Hess scored four goals on Sunday, all in the first half. It was her first collegiate hat trick. Freshman forward Merri McKissock and senior forward Allison Haynes also scored, and Frantz added a second goal in the second half.

The Cardinals' offense was just as aggressive Saturday against the Hoosiers, but the scoreboard didn't reflect it. They won 1-0, but the game was never close.

Haynes scored the lone goal unassisted 3:58 into the first half. After that, the Hoosiers had few chances to tie the score.
