Rainey, soccer team host Wright State in exhibition

Match will prepare team for season's tough MAC schedule.

The Ball State women's soccer team will host an exhibition game on Saturday against Wright St. before opening the season up the 2002 season.

Head coach Ron Rainey said the game will offer an excellent chance to see the team's strengths and what they need to work on to get better.

"We're going to focus on ourselves and what we've been working on in practice," Rainey said. "We want to see how well we can execute this early in the season."

The program is entering its fourth season and is trying to build on last year's squad that made a postseason appearance for the first time. The game also marks the beginning of the end for Ball State's first graduating class of seniors, including Emily Feeney, Alexia Karamanis, KD Moreland, Shannon Pascoe, Ehren Reagor, Abbie Renaker and Eileen Weinheimer.

Rainey said the exhibition should be a great game against a solid opponent.

Wright St. has advanced to the NCAA Tournament three out of the last four seasons and also won Midwestern Collegiate Conference titles in 1998, 1999 and 2000. The Raiders already have their first exhibition under their belt, with a 3-0 victory over Mid-American Conference foe Toledo, Aug. 19.

Rainey also said that the strength of their non-conference schedule should be instrumental in preparing the team for the high level of competition they will face come league play.

"This game will help us prepare for a very tough MAC schedule," Rainey said. "I'm going to play as many people as possible but at the same time go stretches with our starters and get it as close to a real game situation as possible."
