McDuffie says experience is key

Richard McDuffie, athletic director at Eastern Illinois, called himself "an agent of change," during the third open forum held Wednesday as part of the search for Ball State's new athletic director.

"I would like to do things a little bit different and a little bit better," McDuffie said.

After working at six colleges over the course of his 25-year career as an athletic director, McDuffie said making decisions and being the head of a department are two of his strongest attributes.

"I am a decision maker, and I will set policies for the program," McDuffie said.

Although McDuffie said joining the Big Ten should not be an aspiration for Ball State, he does want to see Ball State win more Mid-American Conference championships.

"(Ball State) should dominate the MAC," McDuffie said. "I don't see why we couldn't dominate across the board with all sports in the MAC."

McDuffie said fund raising and increasing budgets were two ways he could improve Ball State athletics.

According to his resume, he increased Eastern Illinios' athletic budget by $2 million and added 10 new coaching and staff positions since 1998. Also while at EIU, McDuffie oversaw the construction of the new baseball stadium and completions of the Victory Suites in the football facility.

McDuffie said he has never had any career goals.

"If I wanted to be a big shot I should have done things a lot differently a long time ago," McDuffie said. "I would rather be at a smaller place where I could be a success and make a difference.

"I don't know if that's good or bad - that's just me."

Lawrence (Bubba) Cunningham, associate athletic director for external affairs at Notre Dame, will hold the last interview at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Art and Journalism Studio.
