Cards lose in MAC first round

No. 4 Ball State was defeated 13-4 by No. 3 Kent State today at Bowling Green, Ohio. The Cards are 31-22 this season following the loss.

The Cards were down 7-0 after the second inning and the only chance for a comeback surfaced in the seventh inning, when Ball State's Matt Deckman sparked a two-run rally and advanced the score to 7-2. Brad Snyder added a double and eventually scored on a two-out bunt by Doug Boone.

The Kent State Flashes moved their lead to 11-2, adding four runs in the bottom half of the inning. An error by Boone, BSU's catcher, brought a close to the inning and sealed the Cardinals' fate.

Cardinal Scott French's over-the-fence home run to center field was a desperate attempt to salvage the game in the eighth inning, as the score moved to 11-3 Kent State.

Adam Metzler tallied Ball State's final run in the ninth inning with a solo home run to left-center field, bringing the final score to 13-4.

Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year Bryan Bullington in five innings surrendered seven runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts.

The Cardinals will battle elimination from the MAC Tournament as they take on No. 1 Bowling Green today at 1 p.m.
