'Taste of Muncie' to offer a needed break to students before finals

This year's "Taste of Muncie," an annual fund-raising event sponsored by the Muncie Center for the Arts, has some new features that might be beneficial to Ball State students.

"Taste of Muncie" is Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Community Civic Center downtown. This year, discounted student tickets are available for $15.

"This is the first time student tickets have been available," said Ashley Furnivall, a Ball State senior who is interning with Muncie Center for the Arts.

Cathy Hardwick, the center's director of administration, said because students help contribute to the center, they can purchase tickets for $15 instead of $20.

"We use a lot of students (here), and we know students don't have a lot of money," Hardwick said. "It's a nice break for them because of finals."

Part of what students can experience at "Taste of Muncie" is a variety of donated foods from 30 different venders.

Among some of the vendors featured are Applebee's, Pizza Hut, Incredible Yogurt and MCL Cafeteria.

Campus vendors such as The Atrium and Ball State University Catering will also be featured.

This will be an "all-you-can-eat" event, though no vender is offering a full meal, Hardwick said.

"You'll be full when you leave, and you can eat until your heart's content," she said.

However, food isn't the only reason to come to this event.

Furnivall said this is also a good opportunity to job-search and find out what places are hiring in Muncie.

"Managers talk to the people who show up, and students have gotten job opportunities," Furnivall said.

MITS is offering a free shuttle service throughout the evening. Some of the stops are at Riverside and McKinley avenues, Riverside and New York avenues and New York and Neeley avenues, starting at 4 p.m.

This year's theme is "Flavors of our Nation," and will feature chocolate- and cake-making demonstrations on the second floor of the Civic Center.

Hardwick said the theme stems from the current wave of patriotism, and the center wants to keep that spirit going during this event. Background music, with the tunes "God Bless America" and "New York, New York," will be played throughout the afternoon.

Tickets can be purchased at the door for $25 and in advance from Muncie's First Merchants banks, the MT Cup, the Blue Bottle, Block and Barrel in the Atrium and from the Student Government Association office in Student Center Room 223.

Tickets purchased in advance are $20 for adults, $15 for students and $5 for children ages 7 to 12. Children 6 years old and younger are admitted free.
