Softball splits weekend with RedHawks

From Staff Reports

The softball team traveled to Oxford, Ohio, during the weekend, looking to bounce back from a pair of losses to Illinois earlier in the week.

The Cardinals (15-17, 7-5 Mid-American Conference) split a doubleheader with Miami on Saturday, winning the first game, 6-0, and losing the second game, 3-2. Sunday's single game was canceled because of poor weather and will not be made up, according to MAC rules.

Junior Katie Shea led an offensive attack in the first game that pounded out a season-high 14 hits. Shea and junior Ruth Hjelmeland were both 3-4 at the plate and Hjelmeland scored two runs in the game. Sophomore Randi Freese pitched the distance, recording her third shutout of the season.

In game two, the Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 lead but could not manage any more runs as the Redhawks came back for the victory. Freese, pitching in relief of the starter Cortney Winger, took the loss to move her season record to 7-8.

The trip to Miami marked the end of a 10-game road trip for the Cardinals. They will play their first home game since April 7 on Tuesday, when they face Indiana in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Ball State Softball Complex.
