Letter to the editor: Cartoon insensitive toward Muslims

Dear editor:

I was surprised and upset by the editorial cartoon published in the Daily News Tuesday. The cartoon shows the words of two Muslims of whom one says to the other, "Die Jewish dog, death to the Christian infidel, take that, Muslim fanatic." A woman, who is sitting with her husband watching television, asks with much surprise: "Why do they call it the Holy Land?

Ma'am, it is the Holy Land because Jesus was born there and several other prophets were sent to people in that area. It is shocking that this disgusting cartoon appears during a period of time when hundreds of innocent civilians are killed in massacres just to satisfy the blood shedding desire of Ariel Sharon.

Do you really believe all Muslims are like this? Did you really want to convey a message to that all the Muslims are fanatic and have no tolerance for people of different religions? Did you think about the consequences of a cartoon that might expose Muslim students to all kinds of harassment?

I hope you give us a voice to defend ourselves and to explain to people that all the negative ideas they have are no more than misconceptions. Muslim people are just as good as you are. In each society you find the good and the bad. Even in the American society there are some bad people. If it turns out that there are Muslims who are "fanatic" and "extremists," it is not because they are Muslims.

After all, there are so many Jews and Christians who are fanatic and extremists.
