Four students arrested in separate drug raids

Police confiscate marijuana, steroids, scales and shotgun.

Four Ball State students were arrested Tuesday afternoon in two separate drug raids by the Muncie-Delaware County Drug Task Force.

Two Ball State students were arrested Tuesday afternoon after 19-year-old John Lam of Schererville allegedly sold drugs to an undercover cop from his Beeman Hall dorm room.

His roommate, Carlton Barlow, Gary, was preliminarily charged with dealing marijuana, maintaining a common nuisance and possession of marijuana.

Police confiscated six pounds of marijuana, 200 steroid pills, syringes, scales and $1,000 in cash.

"From what was seized they were definitely experienced dealers," city/county drug task force coordinator Jess Neal told the Star Press. "We normally don't see this amount of drugs inside a dorm room."

According to Neal the drugs were worth $10,000.

"When people see that we are pursuing these types of cases and it is not a free haven for people to do what they want, it will have an impact on the drug activity," Ball State police chief Gene Burton told the Star Press.

Both Lam and Barlow are in custody at the Delaware County jail. Bail was set for Lam at $60,000 and Barlow at $30,000.

University officials told the Star Press Tuesday that Lam and Barlow would probably be kicked out of the residence hall. All residence halls have a zero tolerance policy on drugs.

Three hours after the arrest of Lam and Barlow the drug task force arrested two Ball State students who were reportedly dealing out of their 1116 W. Carson St. home, police told the Star Press.

Phillip Leas, Marion, and Kyle Guerin, Upland, were arrested on numerous charges police told the Star Press that about $200 worth of marijuana and a shotgun were seized.
