BSU Coaches' contracts extended

The Ball State University athletics department has reached verbal contract agreements with both head Cardinal basketball coaches, according to a report released Thursday.

Tracy Roller of the women's team will receive a base salary of $93,000. At the same time, Roller also received a three-year contract extension which extended through the 2006-'07 season.

Tim Buckley of the men's team received a base salary of $120,000 and a three-year contract extension. It extended his contract through the 2007-'08 season.

"We are very happy to have these two fine, young coaches under contract for the next few years," Seger said in the release. "They have both done a tremendous job with their respective basketball programs. The Ball State basketball programs have had success on the court, in the classroom and within the community. We are very pleased with the progress our basketball teams are making in all areas."

The women's team finished the season with a 24-8 overall record and a 13-3 mark in the Mid-American Conference. The men's team finished the season with a 23-12 overall record and a 13-3 mark in the MAC.

Both teams made it into their respective National Invitation Tournament. The postseason runs for each team were the longest in school history for both teams.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

Akron, Buffalo up next for Cardinals

The Ball State women's tennis team returns to the road for its longest weekend trip of the season. The Cardinals travel to Akron for a Mid-American Conference match Friday and then continue on to Buffalo to face the Bulls in the regular-season league finale Saturday. BSU is 10-7 overall and 2-5 in the MAC after weekend losses to Miami and Marshall.

Buffalo is last in the MAC with an 0-7 league mark and a 2-13 overall record. The Zips have only won one conference match while amassing six losses in league play. They have an overall record of 5-11.

SOFTBALL

Squad looks to rebound at Miami

After being swept in a doubleheader on Tuesday by Illinois, the softball team looks to rebound this weekend against Miami.

The Cardinals (14-16 overall, 6-4 Mid-American Conference) travel to Oxford, Ohio, for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and conclude the series with a 1 p.m. single game on Sunday.

The Cardinals will look to continue their five-game MAC winning streak against the RedHawks (14-28, 6-8).

Despite its record, Miami comes into the weekend's contests with momentum, having won seven of its last eight games. Also, RedHawk senior Angie Gerber was named MAC Eastern Division Player of the Week on Monday.

Gerber is hitting .310 on the season with five home runs (tied for second in the MAC) and 22 RBIs. Miami as a team, however, has the second worst team batting average in the MAC (.208), the second worst team ERA (3.61) and is last in team fielding percentage (.935).

Several Cardinal players will look to continue their strong play in conference games during the weekend.

Junior Katie Shea is currently eighth in the MAC in batting average (.375) and has hit at a .516 clip in the Cardinals' 10 MAC games.

Sophomore Kris Burdine leads the MAC in triples (4), while senior Ali Orel has hit .381 with four RBIs during her current seven-game hitting streak. Sophomore pitcher Randi Freese is 4-1 in MAC games, compiling a 1.38 ERA and 43 strikeouts.
