College prepares for change

Three main alterations in the college will be effective July 1.

The College of Business will undergo a major restructuring effective July 1.

Lynne Richardson, the new dean of the college, said the restructuring will include three main changes.

The first change will shrink the six-department college to five. Part of the Department of Managing will join the Business Information Technology Department, and the remaining section will join the Marketing Department.

"The business information technology people and the management people have been talking, and they want to get together to create a better major and to get the students more prepared for the job market," Richardson said.

Ray Montagno, chairman for the Department of Manage-ment, said while some people may be affected, the change will not have an impact on the majority of the faculty.

"As a department chair there is a chance I could be out of a job, but in general for professors it won't change their jobs too much," he said.

Richardson also said in 2003 the other three departments will be consolidated into two.

A second associate dean will also be employed to share responsibilities with the first. A search will be conducted to fill both positions.

"One will be in charge of instruction and operations," Richardson said. "The other will handle research and outreach, to work better with the community and make the college a better community player."

An assistant to the dean will be created and placed in charge of graduate programs.

Richardson said the most important factor in the success of reconstruction is the faculty's reaction.

"After you get over the shock of change, it's just a matter of getting used to it," Richardson said. "But the students will be the winners down the road."
