Cards continue struggle for 'good round'

MAC championships to take place April 26-28 in Hamilton, Ohio.

In its second-straight performance the team labeled disappointing, the women's golf team finish thirteenth of 15 teams in Friday and Saturday's Lady Colonel Classic hosted by Eastern Kentucky.

The Cardinals shot 1,013 in their first three-round tournament of the year. Toledo, shooting 942, won its second-straight event after winning the Bronco Invitational April 7-8.

"We had sporadic bits of good performances, just not a good collective performance," head coach Shelley Sanders said.

The Cardinals' quest to put together four good individual scores in one round this season continues. The team's goal was to do this in two of the three rounds at the Classic.

"We had a few good rounds, but we weren't able to have all four players have a good round," Sanders said.

The good rounds Sanders mentioned were sophomore Lisa Robertson's first-round 79 and senior Tracy Myers' second-round 80. Both tied for 47th in the 87-person field.

Heading into the Lady Colonel, Sanders stressed the importance of confidence in the team's play. Despite the poor finish, she said the performance should not hurt the team's confidence.

"Anytime you're disappointed in your performance it doesn't help your confidence," Sanders said. "Our confidence builds in every tournament we play in. I hope (our performance) motivates us to work a little harder."

Team captain Robertson agreed that confidence is important, but said the team could use more of it.

"We each need to have confidence in ourselves and believe we're good golfers," Robertson said. "Coach has confidence in us, but we need to believe we can compete with the top teams."

Myers said, "We just have to build our confidence and play well. We're a little shaken (after the Classic), but we know we can play better."

Although this was one of the Cardinals' lowest finishes of the season, Sanders said her team is improving with every competition.

"I've seen signs of improvement," Sanders said. "I just haven't seen a difference in the scores. It's frustrating and misleading."

The team now has two weeks before the Mid-American Conference championships April 26-28 in Hamilton, Ohio.

The team will play qualifying rounds this week to see which five golfers will play in the championships. Next week the five will focus on individual preparation.
