Team USA looks for gold in Salt Lake City

To many of us, ice simply cools our drinks or is a nuisance on the roads and sidewalks. To the athletes competing in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games however, it's life. These athletes spend days, months, even years perfecting their skills. Nonetheless, only seconds separate athletes who leave Salt Lake City with a medal and those who go home empty-handed. And mere fractions of points distinguish the winners from the losers.

Dedicated athletes from around the world hit the ice in early-morning preparation for the Games. Whether bashing bodies or gliding gracefully on the rink, these athletes all have the glimmer of gold in their eyes. Some race speedily around a track, others slide a 40-pound stone more than 100 feet, stopping it within inches of the target. Athletes of all ages, races and nationalities alike compete on the ice for the prize every athlete dreams of.
